Work With Brian
Brian is an expert dramaturg, working with professional companies & individual writers at every level of experience to help shape their work into its best possible form.
As a previous reader for Theatre 503 and the Climate Playwriting Prize, as well as module convenor for St Mary’s University’s Playwriting MA, he brings an insider’s understanding of contemporary new play development. His insightful and sensitive support has helped writers usher their scripts onto the shortlists for Papatango, the Women’s Playwriting Prize and other awards, as well as fringe & touring productions.
What Other Writers Say…
‘Brian comes to your script with an open mind and is quick to get to the heart of your story. He always asks insightful questions. He’s helped to develop me as a playwright and I come back time and again to the lessons I have learnt from him when I’m working independently on my scripts.’
- Emma Anderson, Finalist - Papatango Playwriting Prize (The Lesson, Theatre 503)
‘Brian was great at steering me towards making my script richer, teasing more out of what I was trying to do—indeed, making me think more about what I was trying to achieve—and making the writing work harder. He's very supportive and encouraging while also capable of giving hard truths when they're needed.’
- Jon Bradfield, Winner - Through the Mill Playwriting Prize (Animal, Park Theatre)
‘Brian’s dramaturgical guidance is laser-focused and instinctive–he has a real gift for seeing the bigger picture. Our one-on-one sessions are always lively and inspiring, and his observations and questions around motivation, character, and structure helped guide me through a forest I’d been stuck in for a long time. I genuinely don’t think I’d have finished the script without him.’
- Terry Ronald, bookwriter & composer (Becoming Nancy, Birmingham Rep)
‘Working with Brian as a dramaturg was invaluable! He managed to understand both the structure and emotional heart of my play, and his feedback was thoughtful, insightful and encouraging. He has a real gift for finding creative solutions to scenes that aren't working, often opening up possibilities I hadn't thought of, while always making sure the play stayed true to my own voice.’
- Mercedes Bahleda, writer-performer
